Rwanda Mahmebe is a medium-roast, washed Red Bourbon grown at 1,800–2,000 meters near Mahembe in Rwanda's Karongi district, cupping with dark chocolate, orange, and toffee. It's a deeper, more dessert-toned cup than Rwanda's brighter, more citrus-forward lots — a reminder that altitude and variety only tell part of the story; roast level and the specific microclimate around a washing station shape the cup just as much.

Mahembe sits within the same Karongi district that produces Rwanda Karongi, a lighter-roast, berry-and-grapefruit sibling lot grown under nearly identical conditions — same district, same elevation band, same Red Bourbon variety. The difference in the cup comes down almost entirely to the roast: a medium roast here develops sugars further, pulling the profile toward chocolate and toffee rather than the brighter fruit character a lighter roast preserves.

Rwanda's coffee industry runs on a central-washing-station model uncommon in scale even among specialty-coffee origins, and that infrastructure is a large part of why a district like Karongi can consistently produce clean, well-processed lots like this one. It's a good match for drinkers who want Rwanda's quality reputation in a warmer, more familiar chocolate-forward register. Mahmebe sits in our Rich & Chocolatey collection.
