Karongi
Rwanda Karongi is a light-roast, washed Red Bourbon grown at 1,800–2,000 meters in Rwanda's Karongi district, cupping with honey, wild berry, and grapefruit for a bright, tea-like profile. Karongi sits above Lake Kivu in Rwanda's Western Province, one of the country's most established coffee-growing districts, and this lot's altitude puts it well into the range where Rwandan Bourbon shows its brightest, most citrus-forward side.
Washed processing is central to that clarity — pulping and fermenting the cherry before drying keeps the grapefruit and berry notes distinct rather than letting them blur into heavier, more fermented territory, and the light roast preserves that same brightness instead of roasting it down into something denser. Rwanda's coffee sector runs almost entirely on this washed-at-a-central-station model, which is a large part of why lots like this one taste as clean and consistent as they do.
This is a coffee built for drinkers who want the acidity and fruit character of a washed East African lot without the more intense florals of an Ethiopian coffee — a gentler entry point into that bright, high-altitude style. For a deeper, more chocolate-forward cup from the same district, DABOV also carries Rwanda Mahmebe. Karongi sits in our Bright & Fruity collection.
