ESE stands for Easy Serving Espresso — a 44mm paper pod holding a single, pre-tamped dose of ground coffee, roughly 7 grams, sealed so the grounds stay contained rather than sitting loose in the brew basket. It's an open standard: any machine built with an ESE-compatible pod holder will accept a pod from any roaster who packs to that shape, unlike a closed, single-brand capsule system.

These pods are not Nespresso-compatible. Nespresso uses a sealed, proprietary capsule format that only works in Nespresso-brand or Nespresso-licensed machines, and it isn't interchangeable with the flat, open ESE paper pod in either direction. If your machine takes a flat 44mm paper pod in its portafilter-style basket rather than a sealed capsule, it's built to the ESE standard.

Check your machine for ESE or E.S.E. labeling on the pod holder or in its manual if you're unsure which format it uses — the two systems are genuinely different pieces of hardware, not just different brands of the same thing.

Decaffeination changes a bean's chemistry somewhat before roasting, which is why decaf coffee in general tends to taste a touch quieter than a caffeinated equivalent from the same origin.
