Blue Mountain
Jamaica Blue Mountain is a washed-process Typica coffee grown at 1,500 meters in Jamaica's Blue Mountain range, known for an exceptionally smooth, low-bitterness cup of raisins, dark chocolate, and walnuts. It's one of the most recognized origin names in coffee, and also one of the most imitated — the region's cool, misty, high-elevation growing conditions produce a genuinely distinctive cup, which is exactly why the name gets borrowed so often by coffee that never grew anywhere near Jamaica.
The variety here is Typica, one of the two founding cultivars nearly all cultivated Arabica descends from, grown at an elevation that slows ripening and builds density into the bean. A fully washed process — pulping the cherry and fermenting off the mucilage before drying — is the traditional method for this origin, and it's what produces the clean, low-acid, notably un-bitter cup Blue Mountain built its reputation on.
A medium roast is the standard level for this origin, developed enough to bring out the walnut and dark chocolate notes without pushing past the point where roast char competes with this coffee's naturally mild character. Because authenticity is the single biggest question any Blue Mountain buyer should ask, see the Sourcing & Authenticity tab below for what to look for in any lot carrying this name. It's part of our Exclusive Coffees collection, alongside Kopi Luwak — the two most sought-after and most counterfeited names in coffee.
