ESE pods are not interchangeable with Nespresso capsules in either direction. Nespresso runs a sealed, brand-specific capsule system sized and shaped nothing like a flat 44mm paper pod, so a machine built for one format cannot use the other. If your espresso machine has a portafilter-style basket that accepts a flat paper pod rather than a sealed plastic or aluminum capsule, it's almost certainly built to the ESE standard.

The format is common on machines marketed as pod-ready rather than strictly portafilter-only — a segment that's stayed popular in home espresso specifically because it needs no grinder, no scale, and no tamping.
