Ethiopia Karamo Washed is a super-light-roast, washed-process coffee grown at 2,380 meters in Ethiopia's Sidama zone — a 2025 Global Coffee Awards finalist lot with honey, dates, and stone fruit in the cup. We buy this lot directly from farmer Niguse Gemeda Mude, whose plot sits at an elevation most origins can't match, and the coffee is fully washed: cherries are pulped and the mucilage fermented off before drying, which is what gives this cup its cleaner, more defined fruit character.
Washed processing removes the fruit before drying rather than leaving it on, so the flavors here come almost entirely from the bean's own chemistry and the variety planted — in this case 74158, a disease-resistant Ethiopian cultivar known for a delicate, high-toned cup at altitude. A super-light roast preserves that delicacy; push the roast any darker and the honey and stone-fruit notes start to flatten into generic sweetness.
This is the cleaner half of a two-lot pair from the same farm: we also carry Ethiopia Karamo Anaerobic, grown on the same ground but fermented in sealed tanks instead of open troughs. Tasted side by side, the two lots make the clearest possible case for how much process alone can reshape a cup from identical trees. This washed lot anchors our Bright & Fruity collection and our Exclusive Coffees roster.
