Green coffee is soaked to draw out both caffeine and flavor compounds into a saturated solution called Green Coffee Extract; that extract is then filtered to remove only the caffeine molecules (which are a different size than the flavor compounds), and reused to gently pull caffeine from subsequent batches of green coffee without stripping their flavor out along with it. The method traces back to processing work pioneered in Switzerland in the 1930s and has been commercially produced since 1988 by a dedicated facility in British Columbia, Canada.

Decaffeination always happens at the green (unroasted) bean stage, before any roasting — it's a step in coffee's processing chain, not something done to finished, roasted coffee. Combined with certified-organic farming (no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers in cultivation), this capsule sits at the intersection of two of the more involved, higher-standard practices available in specialty decaf sourcing.

Decaffeination doesn't change the hardware fit: this capsule is built to the Nespresso Original-format spec, sized and sealed the same as our regular espresso capsules, and it's sold in 10-, 70-, or 110-count boxes for OriginalLine-style machines. As with every DABOV capsule, it's an independently produced, compatible product — not manufactured, licensed, or endorsed by Société des Produits Nestlé S.A., which owns the Nespresso trademark.

If you own a Nespresso Vertuo machine, this isn't the capsule for it — Vertuo uses its own larger, barcode-based capsule system that a Vertuo machine reads and spins to brew, and an Original-format capsule can't substitute for that.

Also worth flagging clearly: the beans are 100% Arabica and the capsule is 100% compostable, both printed on the box — which beats the aluminum shell still standard across most of the category, a small but real upside if you're already thinking about waste.

Sugarcane-derived ethyl acetate decaffeination is sometimes marketed as "natural" because the solvent originates from a plant source, but it's still a solvent-based method chemically distinct from the solvent-free Swiss Water Process used here.
