What Is White Pu-erh Tea?

White pu-erh is a less common style that borrows white tea's gentle processing — minimal handling, no rolling or heavy oxidation — and applies it to the large-leaf tea varietal traditionally used for pu-erh, rather than to the small-leaf varietal used for most white tea. The result sits apart from both categories: softer and less earthy than a typical dark or aged pu-erh, but with more body than a delicate bud-only white tea made from small-leaf material.

Pu-erh itself is a defined category tied specifically to Yunnan Province, China, made from the region's broad-leaf Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant — a stricter geographic and botanical definition than most other tea styles carry. White-processed pu-erh (sometimes called "moonlight white" or Yue Guang Bai in its home region) is a smaller niche within that category, built for drinkers who want pu-erh's leaf material without the deeper, earthier character dark or aged pu-erh typically develops.

It's part of DelmarTe's Daily Ritual collection, a distinctive pick for anyone curious about pu-erh who wants to start with a lighter, more approachable expression of the leaf.
