COE Nicaragua #2 is a Cup of Excellence competition lot from Nicaragua's 2025 harvest — a washed Maracaturra grown by producer Byron Antonio Sánchez in Matagalpa, ranked second nationally with a score of 90.5, cupping with honey, kiwi, chamomile, and white grape. In Nicaragua the competition runs under its Spanish name, Taza de la Excelencia — literally Cup of Excellence — but the mechanics match the program everywhere it operates: a national jury cups every entry blind, the top scorers are re-cupped by an international jury of buyers and Q graders, and only the coffees that hold up under both juries earn a place in the auction.

A 90.5 average is a genuinely high bar — most specialty coffee sits in the low-to-mid 80s on the same 100-point scale — and this lot cleared it while growing an unusual varietal for the price point: Maracaturra, a large-bean hybrid that most roasters only encounter in small, competition-priced lots. We carry it as part of our rotating Competition Series, the same collection that holds our other Cup of Excellence lots from Ethiopia and El Salvador.

For a full look at how a coffee moves from a national jury table to an international auction to a bag on your shelf, read our post on how coffee is traded from auction to market. For a non-competition Nicaraguan coffee for everyday drinking, Nicaragua La Huella is a good place to start.
