Sidama
COE Ethiopia #3 is a Cup of Excellence competition lot from Ethiopia's 2024 harvest — a natural-processed Sidama coffee grown at Bukto farm, ranked third nationally with a score of 89.70, cupping with jasmine, apricot, and black cherry. Cup of Excellence returned to Ethiopia in 2024 after several years off the competition calendar, and it returned in style: producer Bukto Dure Bore's lot was one of a small group of coffees nationwide to clear the qualifying score that earns entry to the International Phase, where a jury of Q graders and buyers from around the world confirms the national scores before the winning lots go to auction.
Ethiopia doesn't lack for excellent coffee — Sidama alone produces some of the most recognizable natural-processed lots on the market — but most of it reaches roasters as an anonymous regional blend. A Cup of Excellence lot is the opposite: a single farm, a documented score, and a harvest year attached to every bag, which is exactly what this one carries. We hold it as part of our rotating Competition Series, alongside sibling lots from El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Rwanda's own competition program.
Curious how a lot like this actually gets from an Ethiopian jury table to an online auction and into a roaster's hands? Our blog walks through the full path coffee takes from competition to market. We also carry Ethiopia COE #20 2024 from the very same competition, a different Sidama lot that placed further down the same ranking.
