What Is Bancha Green Tea?
Bancha Arashiyama is a whole-leaf Japanese green tea made from more mature tea leaves, picked later in the season than the tender first-flush leaf used for sencha. "Bancha" translates roughly to "common tea" or "everyday tea" in Japanese — it's the plain, workaday counterpart to the more delicate, prized early-season picks, and it's traditionally the green tea Japanese households reach for outside of special-occasion brewing.
The cup itself is light and clean: mild, grassy, and refreshing rather than intensely vegetal or umami-forward, with the bigger, tougher mature leaves brewing to a gentler result than younger, more tender leaf typically gives. It's naturally caffeinated, since it's true green tea (Camellia sinensis), though generally on the milder end of the green tea caffeine range given the leaf's later, more mature harvest.
The Arashiyama name nods to Kyoto's famous bamboo-grove district on the Katsura River — a scenic, historic corner of Japan's old tea-culture heartland — lending the tea an evocative name rather than claiming it as the tea's literal growing site. It's part of DABOV's whole-leaf premium tea collection within the Artisan Series, alongside other Japanese whole-leaf teas like Genmaicha Musashi.
