What Is Genmaicha Green Tea?

Genmaicha Musashi is a whole-leaf Japanese green tea blended with roasted brown rice — a traditional combination whose name literally translates to "brown rice tea" (genmai, brown rice, plus cha, tea). The roasted rice brings a nutty, toasty aroma that plays against the green tea's grassier character, producing a golden-green cup that's noticeably milder and rounder than a straight sencha or bancha.

Historically, genmaicha has working-class roots: roasted rice was originally added to stretch a smaller quantity of tea leaf further, making tea more affordable for households that couldn't otherwise justify a full portion of leaf-only tea. It's since become a genuinely popular style in its own right rather than a budget substitute, prized for exactly the toasted, comforting character the rice adds.

It's caffeinated, since the base is true green tea, though blending in rice — which contains none — generally means less actual tea leaf, and therefore somewhat less caffeine, per volume than an equivalent cup of straight green tea. Part of DABOV's whole-leaf premium tea collection within the Artisan Series, it pairs naturally with another Japanese whole-leaf green tea in the same collection, Bancha Arashiyama.
